Professional Awards

GHATS Professional Award nomination must be submitted by May 31st.
To recognize individuals who have provided meritorious service to GHATS and the athletic training profession over the course of their careers, as well as other individuals whose generosity/service has profoundly benefited GHATS.
In 1990, GHATS established the “Bobby Gunn Award” to honor the accomplishments of one of the first athletic trainers in Texas. This award is presented to a GHATS member in good standing who has exemplified the professionalism and spirit of this true pioneer of athletic training. The award represents the Member’s commitment to excellence in sports medicine and distinguished service to the Greater Houston Athletic Trainers’ Society.
GHATS established the “Tom Wilson Award” in 1995 as a tribute to Tom’s lifelong passion for athletic training and the Greater Houston area. Tom was an inspiration while serving at the University of Houston and was responsible for the careers of many GHATS Members. This award serves to remind us of his dedication and service to athletic training, as well as the standards he set for himself and others.
This award, dedicated in 2005, honors Logan Wood, one of the pioneers of athletic training in Texas, especially Houston. At the core of his many causes and goals, Logan had an unrelenting drive and always pushed for Texas to become one of the first states to have licensing credentials for athletic trainers. The “Logan Wood Award” is presented to a member who has exhibited meritorious service to GHATS.
The G“HATS” Off Award, previously given as the Meritorious Service Award (2005) is presented to a GHATS Member who has exemplified the spirit of athletic training. This award recognizes the actions an athletic trainer has taken under unusual circumstances to protect those in his/her care, or unique, meritorious service performed on behalf of the athletic training profession. In recognition of action taken under unusual circumstances, GHATS proudly presents this award to a member in good standing as deemed by GHATS Executive Board and the Honors & Awards Committee.
Student Awards & Scholarships
Scholarship applications will open November 1st.
Student award nominations and scholarship applications are due December 1st. Nominating ATs must be GHATS members in good standing by December 1st.
Recognition for noteworthy actions by an ATSA or SAT. Overcoming adversity to achieve success or for meritorious action in/during critical situation.
GHATS member must submit a narrative of justification via email to the Honors and Awards Chair for committee review.
Established to recognize outstanding achievement by GHATS member senior ATSA.

- Letter should include statement of intention to pursue a health-related profession and what the scholarship will enable them to do
If selected, the nominee must agree to give a 5 minute presentation to the general assembly at the GHATS Workshop.
Established to recognize outstanding achievement by GHATS member senior ATSA.

If selected, the nominee must agree to give a 5 minute presentation to the general assembly at the GHATS Workshop.
The Scholarship represents Dr. Lowe’s ongoing and continued support of GHATS and his ongoing support and loyalty to Athletic Trainers. Dr. Lowe is a paragon in the Sports Medicine Community. He is a world-renowned Orthopedic and the Head Team Physician for the Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, University of Houston and several local high schools. Dr. Lowe is known for being the consummate professional; however, above all professional traits, he focuses his practice – and teaches his residents and fellows – on the importance of patient-centered care, community involvement and service and continually invests, supports and recognizes Athletic Trainers as important and integral medical professionals
